Coves de Sant Josep – Europe’s longest navigable underground river

by Oana Silviana September 7, 2025
written by Oana Silviana

Trip Advisor declares this attraction the longest navigable underground river. At about 50 kilometers away from Valencia, our Vilafamés excursion continued with Coves de Sant Josep.

The landscapes after leaving behind the small beautiful village will also carry you through a rocky landscape combined with hills and beautiful green scenery. Coves de Sant Josep are located in a natural cave from the the municipality of Vall de Uxó in Castellón region.

You have also free parking and toilets outside the site.

The Galleries & the boat trip

An advice before buying your ticket – if you are claustrophobic, do not enter the caves. You will have a visit of about 1050 meters long, of which 800 meters are covered on water, by boat. At some point the boat will stop to a small pier where you get down and around 250 meters you do it on foot, through a narrow corridor. After that you get inside the boat again and you traverse the channel till you get back to the main entrance.

The entrance ticket can be purchased online and at the main entrance of the site also. If you plan your visit in a crowded period, between June till the end of August, try to buy your tickets before because groups visiting all day will run out any individual tickets bought the same day.

The visit lasts approximately 45 – 50 minutes.  The cave has a constant temperature of 20ºC throughout the year. Inside you will discover in each gallery paintings and engravings declared by the UNESCO. The cave is illuminated with led lights that help its conservation and prevents green in the cave.

You will only be allowed of taking pictures and videos on your way back to the main entrance that is because of the danger of not hitting your head on rocks or standing up and paying attention to your phone, not the rocks in front of you or above you.

Your visit will be accompanied by a Guide-Barquero, sailing the underground river, more than three kilometers long.

As you sail through the different galleries you will see stalactites, flowstones and other karst formations hanging from the ceiling and emerging from the ground, all shaped.

The highlight is the tour round the crystal clear waters that goes by the Azul (Blue) Pond, Murciélagos (Bat) Room, “Boca del Forn”, Diana and El Diablo (Devil) lakes.

The environment is serene and the quietly murmur of falling water and the beauty of the geological formations will transport you to a fairytale world.

Importance of the caves

The main areas and galleries within the Coves de Sant Josep are the Gallery of the Iberian Settlement and the Singin’ in the Cave area, which features the navigable river. The “Singin’ in the Cave” experience includes traversing the subterranean river, while the “Gallery of the Iberian Settlement” highlights the ancient history of the location. One important and curious aspect of the galleries and the river inside them is the fact that the water is fresh and can be drinkable.

The water is responsible for shaping the cave’s impressive rock formations and the growth of stalactites and stalagmites over thousands of years.

According turismolavallduixo.com, in order to enlarge the space for the boat tour, the narrow passages were dynamited, and the underground river was drained to remove debris and rocks. From that point on, the number of tourists grew exponentially from over 3.000 visitors in 1960 to 20.000 the following year. This number doubled in 1962 and Valencian travel agencies began to include a visit to the site among their regular tourist excursions.

Nowadays the importance of the Coves de Sant Josep lies in its status as a major natural and cultural landmark, featuring the longest navigable underground river in Europe and significant archaeological sites, including Paleolithic paintings and engravings. It is a testament to geological processes, hosting a unique ecosystem and serves as a significant site for adventure tourism and cultural festivals, making it a valuable natural wonder and a key tourist destination in the region of Castellón.

Give it a check in and discover its secrets. Don’t miss out the next excursion in Valencia area. 💜

Valencia and Peñíscola – fairytale landscapes on the Mediterranean Coast

by Oana Silviana August 25, 2025
written by Oana Silviana

Would you enjoy a new summer and autumn destination with exclusive places and charming landscapes exactly in the region where you pick up your accommodation by the sea? My first travel to Valencia this year brought me 2 weeks of wonderful landscapes both inside and outside town. I will travel you through some of the most beautiful places in Valencia and Peñíscola for your holiday.

Valencia is one of the most  vibrant cities on Spain’s southeastern coast and the charming  Peñíscola resort is your seaside’s magic  in the province of Castellón. This could be your home to some of the most beautiful places on the Mediterranean coast. Both of the destinations offer a mix of history, culture and stunning natural beauty that captivate visitors and transport them into a world of magic.

Valencia: a city of enchantment

Valencia is a city full of history and modernity. Its charm is coming from the stunning architecture and picturesque streets. One of the most magical places of Valencia is the City of Arts and Sciences – the futuristic complex designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. The structures are surrounded by reflective pools and create an enchanting atmosphere, especially at night when the buildings are illuminated. Walking through this area feels like stepping into a science fiction fantasy.

If you want to go deep into a historical experience, Valencia Cathedral and its surrounding old town – El Carmen are must-visits. The Cathedral with its Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque elements is full of legends.

It is said to house the Holy Grail, making it a place of pilgrimage for many tourists. The cobblestone streets of El Carmen, lined with colorful buildings and ancient landmarks like the Torres de Serranos and Torres de Quart, transport visitors back in time.

For those seeking a seaside fairytale, the beaches outside Valencia offer golden sands and turquoise waters alongside charming promenades. Watching the sunset here feels like a scene straight out of a romantic novel.

Peñíscola – the castle by the sea

Peñíscola is a picturesque resort town, often referred to as the “Gibraltar of Valencia” because of its dramatic location on a rocky landscape that extends into the Mediterranean.

The castle is the symbol of the small resort near the sea, also known as the Papa Luna Castle.  This medieval fortress offers breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and of the surrounding town. Built in the 13th century, the castle’s robust stone walls and towers evoke images of knights, kings and mythical battles. The castle is also famous because of filming some of the scenes from Game of Thrones.

The old town Peñíscola has narrow, fairytale streets and white washed houses adorned with colorful flowers will captivate the visitor. As you walk through the streets you’ll discover hidden courtyards, quaint cafes and artisan shops selling local crafts.

The blend of history, culture and natural beauty creates an atmosphere that feels like stepping into a storybook.

The beaches of Peñíscola are also magical. The main beach, Playa Norte stretches for miles and offers soft sands and crystal-clear water. With the majestic castle in the background, it’s easy to imagine yourself sitting next to the sea.

A tale for two destinations

Valencia and Peñíscola are perfect destinations for those seeking new adventures.

The town enchants has a blend of historical greatness and futuristic design, while Peñíscola captivates with the medieval charm and stunning coastal landscapes.

written by Oana Silviana

There are more than 14 days since I came back to Romania, hoping that everything that is going on is just a bad dream.  For all of us who have a full time travelling position or are simply passioned about travel, this is not only a bad timing (as season was about to begin soon), but a time when resilience and hope must carry the communities affected by these horrible times.
